What you need to know about Mauritius before you go

The Republic of Mauritius is situated around 900 km from Madagascar and makes up part of the Mascarene Islands. The island is around 2,040 square kilometres and has around 1.3 million inhabitants. Mauritius has a coast line of 177 km and is about 11 times the size of Washington DC. This island has been colonised by the Dutch, the French, the British and by India and the influences are still evident. The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis and it is located in the north west of the island. The island has been divided into 9 areas: Plaines Wilhems, Pamplemousses, Black River, Port Louis, Moka, Rivière du Rempart, Flacq, Savanne, and Grand Port. Mauritius is renowned for its extremely clean beaches with white sand and turquoise waters as well as its range of exquisite hotels.

Visa and Health Requirements for Mauritius

Do South Africans need a Visa when travelling to Mauritius?
South African passport holders do not require visas or inoculations for travel to Mauritius.
Passports need to be valid for a minimum of six months after return date back to South Africa.

The prerequisite for entering Mauritius is a valid passport. The tourists are entitled to stay for a maximum period of 3 months provided they have a valid passport and visa, return ticket and ample money.

At this stage South African passport holders do not require a visa for travel to Mauritius, only a valid passport. A European individual shall have to possess a visa if he/ she stay in Mauritius for more than 3 months. The visas are issued by the Government of Mauritius to the individual without any cost. The longevity of the visa is for 3 months.

Documents required for visa and passport:


The following documents are to be submitted before obtaining the visa:

  • 2 passport size photographs
  • Photocopy of birth certificate
  • Photocopy of return tickets
  • Photocopy of return tickets
  • Self addressed envelope with stamps
  • Photocopy of passport or visa

The visitors have to submit evidences about their fund status. They shall have to inform about the place where they will be residing in Mauritius. The tourists visiting from regions which are suffering from any epidemic or malady shall have to produce the certificate of vaccination.

The official airline - Air Mauritius -is headquartered in St. Louis. It recognizes itself as a 'preferred leisure airline'. Air Mauritius is well connected with cities in Europe and Australia. It connects Mauritius with Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt, Durban, Cape Town, London, Milan, Milan Malpensa, Munich, Rome and Zurich. . Other popular airlines to Mauritius from South Africa include  British Airways,and  South African Airways.Many of these airlines offer cheap flights to Mauritius. For availing discount rates and cheap flights, you should book your air tickets to Mauritius in advance.

The Sir Seewoo Sagur Ramgoolam International Airport (airport code - MRU), Plaisance just 4 kms from Mahebourg is the base of Air Mauritius Airlines. This airport has just one terminal building with a parking facility too. Apart from that, the tourists can find duty free shops, florist, restaurants, banks, Air Mauritius Lounge along with AML Lounge – VIP while waiting for their flights to and from Mauritius.

to wear long trousers at dinner.
