Activities In Mauritius

Mauritius comes with a multitude of Activities associated with a resort island. Eco-activities, sports and watersports are all catered for. There is no shortage of family friendly activities or extreme sports for the more daring Some adventure activities include zip-lines, mountain climbing and abseiling,kite surfing, quad biking and mountain biking. There are also many golf courses to choose from. Beach and water activities include windsurfing, dinghies, pedal-boats and speed boats for water-skiing. Cruising in yachts is also available while those seeking to go underwater can do it in Scuba gear dives or in submarines or using "Subscooters,".

    The Mauritius Aquarium

    This Aquarium is found in Pointe Aux Piments along the costal road in the North West of Mauritius. The Aquarium is home to a variety of underwater wildlife including the Devil Fire Fish, the Crown Squirrelfish and a number of sharks. The aquarium is open from 9:30 till 5:00 during the week and on Sundays and public holidays it is open between 10:00 and 3:00. Feeding time takes place around 11 daily.


    Casela Bird Park

    The Casela Bird Park is located in the Riviere Noire district between Bambous and Tamarin. The park is home to 140 types of birds in 85 aviaries. Among these birds is one of the rarest birds in the world, the Mauritian Pink Pigeon. As well as birdlife, the park has a small zoo that is home to the Giant Aldabra tortoise, wallaby, lemur, deer, tiger and leopard.  


    The Pamplemousses Gardens

    The Pamplemousses Gardens are in the north of Mauritius and happens to be the oldest botanic garden in the southern hemisphere. The gardens were designed by the famous French Botanist, Pierre Poivre in 1770 and was renamed the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in 1988. In this garden you will see Giant water lilies, Lotus ponds, huge palm trees, the Sacred Fig Tree, Pamplemousses fruit, some of which are Dutch in origin. As well as the flora and fauna, there is also a colonial structure called the looming Mon Plaisir House that is worth a visit.


    The Sugar Mill and Rum Distillery

    The sugar mill and rum distillery is located only a few minutes from the capital city in the Domaine Les Pailles nature park. Contained in this nature park is an old sugar mill that is still in operation and a rum distillery that was established in 1758. There is also a natural reserve, a business and leisure centre, five restaurants, a casino, conference facilities, banqueting facilities and horse riding facilities. This park can be toured by either the horse drawn carriages or the Lady Alice train.


    The Natural History Museum in Mauritius

    The National History Museum can be found near the Jardin de la Compangnie in Port Louis. It was founded in 1880 and it is the oldest museum in Mauritius. This museum has 3 galleries which exhibit reptiles, mammals, birds, marine life, tortoises and insects. The most popular feature in the museum is the skeleton of an extinct bird, the dodo. This bird became extinct in the late 1600’s and the skeleton was found in 2006.


    Mahébourg National History Museum

    Mahébourg is the capital of the Grand Port District and is situated in the South East of Mauritius. It is home to one of the oldest National History museums in the Southern part of Africa and some of its streets still reveal the Dutch and French past. The National History museum gives an insight into the naval battles between the Royal Navy and the French navy. Some exhibits include mortars, canons, part of hulk and bottles from a shipwreck.


    Trou Aux Cerfs

    Trou aux Cerfs, also known as Murr’s volcano, is a volcano that is dormant and it has a crater that is around 300m in diameter and around 80m deep.  It is located in Curepipe, Mauritius. Experts claim this volcano can become active at any time in the next thousand years. The crater is only accessible via its steep embankment, which is considered a bit dangerous.


    Grand Bassin Mauritius

    The Grand Bassin is considered a sacred and holy lake by the Hindus in Mauritius. The Hindus claim that the water in this lake communicates with the water in the Ganges in India. Once a year, on the Maha Sivaratri, the community celebrates in order to honour the Lord Siva.


    Bois Cheri Tea Factory Mauritius

    Located in Bois Cheri, this factory is in the midst of a Tea estate. Tea plantations can be seen when traveling from Grand Bassin. The Bois Cheri tea factory can be found near Grand Bois and La Flora. Tea in Mauritius is said to taste different because of the altitude of Mauritius and because things like Vanilla are added to the tea to improve its taste.


    St Aubin Colonial House

    St Aubin Colonial house is situated in the South of the island, just a few kilometres from Riviere des Anguilles in the Savanne district. Le Saint Aubin Property contains a colonial house which was built in 1819. This house can be visited as part of the Tea route.


    Reserve Des Mascareignes

    This nature park contains thousands of Nile crocodiles, the largest Aldabra and Radiata Tortoise Park in the world, geckos, monkeys, Madagascan Tenrecs, Java Deers, Japanese Koi carps, fruit bats and many other living creatures. One of the main features of this nature park is the butterfly and insect collection. It contains around 23 000 species and has taken over 30 years for Mr Jacques Siedlecki to create.  


    Citadel

    Citadel is a popular landmark that is located in the capital city of Mauritius, Port Louis. It was named Fort Adelaïde in order to honour King William IV.  Construction of the original Citadel began in 1834 and it was completed in 1840. Renovation on this port has taken place since the 1990’s and the aim is to convert it to a landmark for tourism and recreation.  


    Blue Penny Museum

    The Blue Penny Museum is located in Port Louis at Caudan Waterfront and was founded by the Mauritius Commercial Bank. This stamp museum opened in 2001 and contains the 1847 Red Penny and Blue Penny stamps. These stamps were bought for $2,000,000 in 1993 and brought back to Mauritius after 150 years. This museum also contains the statue of Paul and Virginia which was created in 1881.


    Eurêka - Colonial House

    This colonial house is situated in the centre of Mauritius, at Moka, and is owned by Jacques Planteau de Maroussem. It is said that this particular residence is one of the best preserved and its collection consists of antiques, furniture, chinaware, old photographs, old books and more.


    Mauritius Glass Gallery

    The Mauritius Glass Gallery is located in Phoenix, Mauritius.  This gallery is well known for its environment friendly approach when creating home ware. The materials used are 100% recycled making the end products affordable, durable and decorative. The Glass Gallery also contains a display of hand casts of the famous people who have visited the island.


    La Flotte Ltée Ship Models

    This shop is located in the centre of Mauritius in Curepipe. These manufacturers are known for the guaranteed quality of their ship models. They are focused on creating replicas from the original plans of the ships in every era.


    Activities:

    Paradis Golf Challenge

    Mauritius is a year-round golfing destination which has one of the best golf courses in the Indian Ocean. As well as the 18 hole par 72-championship golf course at Paradis, there is a 9-hole mashie course at Shandrani.


    Grand Baie Playground

    The Grand Baie beach is situated around 20 km from Port Louis and is an extremely popular place to visit. This area has become popular because of its spectacular surrounding and because of its activities and facilities. The activities offered include the underwater walk, water skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, sailing and swimming. As well as these activities, you can hire glass bottom boats, a two person submarine and semi-submersible scooters. Nearby facilities include boat trips to the northern islands of Mauritius and deep sea fishing.


    Diving

    Diving is possible around Flic en Flac and Trou aux Biches. Flic en Flac is situated on the west coast of Mauritius and has developed from a tiny fishing village into the second largest tourist area in Mauritius. This area is ideal for diving as there is a concentration of marine life and a surrounding coral reef protecting the area. For a more classic village, it is suggested you visit Trou aux Biches which is located in the North West. It is a great hideaway with beautiful white beaches that span 2km and a blue lagoon.


    Sailing at La Cuvette

    La Cuvette is situated in between Cap Malheureux and Grand Baie.  It is from there that you can hire a yacht and sail the Indian Ocean. The marine life around La Cuvette is well worth seeing and with this trip it is possible as you are able to swim and snorkel from the yacht.


    Catamaran to the Northern Islands

    In Mauritius, a catamaran trip to Gabriel Island, Flat Island and Gunner’s Quoin is offered. Gabriel Island and Flat Island are two of the five islands of Mauritius and are situated only 700 m from each other.  Gabriel Island is around 42 hectares while Flat Island is around 253 hectares, making it the biggest island in the north of Mauritius. Gunner’s Quoin is situated a further 8 km in the north. This island is 65 hectares and has historic value when it comes to its wildlife and vegetation.
